There are two schools of thought when it comes to tanning hides - send the hides out to a commercial tanner or tan the hides yourself. Sending hides out will free up a taxidermist's time though it will add cost and delay mount completion until the hide is received back from the commercial tanner. There is a risk of damage and/or loss when dealing with a tanner that must be considered as well. Many taxidermists choose to do their own tanning; this works well for the small shop that wishes to keep expenses at a minimum, and for larger shops that have a dedicated department for skinning and tanning, thus saving delays and maximizing profit potential.
