In most instructions for tanning, the use for salt is given to you in pounds to the gallon, however in many cases a mistake in the correct amount of salt might mean the difference between a successful job and failure. Also, the salt solution may become weak in a short time, and the best and surest way to test its strength is with the salinometer.
For example:
2 pounds of salt in 5 gallons of water will test around 12 degrees on the salinometer; a saturated salt solution (or as much as the water will hold) would test 100 degrees on the salinometer. Other degrees of saturation can be found with experimenting and then recording for future reference.
